Intermediate Environmental Scientist
Full time
Location: Sherwood Park, Alberta

Educational and other requirements:
- Graduate of a recognized university with a directly related degree in environmental engineering, geoscience, environmental science or biology; equivalent level of experience may be considered.
- Professional designation or eligibility for registration with a recognized professional association.
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience, preferably with some consulting experience.
Essential Skills:
- Environmental site assessment (phase 1 and 2 site assessments), contaminated site investigations, environmental compliance monitoring including groundwater monitoring, remediation and reclamation experience, preferably in the upstream oil and gas industry;
- Interpretation of maps, survey plans and air photos.
- Application of current regulatory criteria, specifically the Reclamation Criteria for Wellsites and Associated Facilities and Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with vegetation and EIA legislation and regulatory agencies (e.g. ERCB, NEB and CEAA);
- Experience with local ecosystems.
- Botanical and vegetation inventory survey experience including taxonomy and species identification; and
- Understanding of boreal forest and grass land ecology with demonstrated experience.
Responsibilities:
- Planning, inspection, management and implementation of field programs.
- Mentoring of GDC junior staff, as required to complete the work.
- Compilation, interpretation and technical report preparation of the data collected.
- Liaison with clients, regulators, sub-consultants and sub-contractors.
- The position requires a combination of field and office work.
Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and make responsible decisions.
- Strong written and oral English skills.
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team

- Professional designation with a recognized professional association.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience, preferably with some consulting experience in Western Canada.
Essential Skills:
- Considerable knowledge and familiarity with the environmental industry in Western Canada, particularly in Alberta.
- Experience with vegetation and EIA legislation and regulatory agencies (e.g. ERCB, NEB, CEAA and AENV);
- Experience with local ecosystems, knowledge of vegetation inventory, understanding of local ecology and related project work.
Responsibilities:
- Reporting directly to the president, provide technical expertise and leadership to the GDC team. This position will also involve project management, proposal preparation, development of cost quotes and preparation and delivery of technical presentations.
- Identify and assess business development opportunities, working with the president on the growth strategy for the company.
- Work directly with project managers to provide support on environmental investigations including biophysical investigations, environmental impact assessments, pre-disturbance assessments, conservation and reclamation plans, and related scopes of work.
- Where required, provide technical assistance to projects as follows:
- Vegetation inventories with a focus on communities and species of concern that include rare species;
- Vegetation analysis for environmental impact assessments;
- Wetland assessments;
- Vegetation assessment for reclamation and remediation projects.
- Liaison with clients, regulators, sub-consultants and sub-contractors.
- Technical report review.
- Supervision of interdisciplinary teams.
- Planning, inspection, management and implementation of field programs.
- Responsible for overall quality assurance and quality control of team work.
- Mentoring and coaching of GDC staff, to assist in growth and development of team.
